National Insurance Programs Forms Group Self-Insurance
Management Division and Appoints Two Senior Executives
June 10, 2003—National
Insurance Programs (NIP) Leading Insurance Intermediary Names President
and Vice President/Chief Underwriting Officer.
National Insurance Programs (NIP), one of the 125 largest U.S.
insurance intermediaries, today announced that it has formed a new
division to focus on the development and management of self-insurance
vehicles for business groups.
NIP has appointed Barry M. Barron, CPCU, division President and
Lyn W. Winters, CPCU, Vice President/Chief Underwriting Officer
of the division's healthcare group.
The new division will be responsible for working with business
groups, agents and brokers to develop innovative self-insurance
solutions. The division will also assume responsibility for the
management and expansion of NIP's established solutions for healthcare
and public entity groups. These include Conventus Inter-Insurance
Exchange, New Jersey's only physician owned and governed medical
malpractice insurance reciprocal; and the Garden State Municipal
Joint Insurance Fund (GSMJIF), one of the largest joint insurance
funds (JIF) in the State of New Jersey, insuring towns with more
than 300,000 residents.
Conventus and the GSMJIF were formed in 2002 when NIP's executives
saw opportunity in the scarce capacity in New Jersey's medical malpractice
and municipal insurance markets. NIP designed, financed and launched
these two innovative solutions in less than a year, proving its
ability to quickly respond to market needs.
"Large corporations have been utilizing alternative risk solutions
to manage their insurance costs for years," said Richard Augustyn,
CEO, National Insurance Programs. "Small businesses need to
pool together to gain access to the alternative risk market and
its benefits. NIP is uniquely positioned to help."
"The organization and management of group self insurance programs
is complex,"
Mr. Augustyn continued. "We've already developed a highly specialized
management team, and put significant resources in place to support
NIP's program management business. With our existing capabilities
this was a natural expansion for us."
Mr. Barron will lead the operations of the new division. Ms. Winters
will utilize her medical malpractice underwriting expertise to manage
the expansion of the division's healthcare business.
"We are thrilled to have two such accomplished individuals
join our senior management team," Mr. Augustyn commented. "Their
insights and abilities will provide us with an immediate strategic
advantage and help us accelerate our business development and fully
realize the new division's potential."
Mr. Barron joins NIP following 25 years in leadership positions
with Zurich North America, AIG and The St. Paul Companies. Mr. Barron
earned a BBA at Temple University in Philadelphia where he majored
in Economics with a minor in Insurance and Finance. He has participated
in numerous executive education programs and earned his CPCU in
1988.
Ms. Winters joins NIP with 25 years experience in various senior
positions in underwriting at Princeton Insurance Company. Most recently
she was AVP of Underwriting, responsible for both institutional
and individual physician medical malpractice business. Ms. Winters
is a member of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management,
The New Jersey Chapter of the CPCU Society and the Professional
Liability Underwriting Society.
